Beyond the Seas Blue Exhibition in Paris

My work will be shown in an exhibition Beyond the Seas Blue at Galerie Cité internationale des arts in Paris, where I was artist-in-residence this summer.

Beyond the Seas Blue is a series of drawings by Asma Kazmi depicting the Sari Sang mine, which is located in a remote area of northeastern Afghanistan. As early as 700 BC and for many centuries after, the mine was the sole source of lapis lazuli, whose trade throughout the ancient world and pre-modern world led to the meeting of East and West.

The drawings in Beyond the Seas Blue are painted in the aquamarine blue of lapis lazuli and presented on rehal or Qur’an stands (book rests used by Muslims for holy books). Spectators have to sit and lean forward to discover the tiny mineral flakes on the surface of the paper.

With this series, Asma Kazmi aims to embody a place beyond the past and the present, a place informed by the various stories about the ancient mines and lapis lazuli itself, the pigment-making process, the origins of materials used in Western art and the artist's own connection to this region of the world.
