BETWEEN WORD and IMAGE
The aim of this project is to disrupt various traditional systems of negotiation and power—between the viewer and the maker, the literate and the illiterate, the sign and what it signifies. To accomplish this, I have invited three illiterate adults to write out personal accounts of various lengths. These writings record marks that linger in the liminal spaces between text and image; they conflate rules of writing and drawing, so that the manuscripts—when engaged via the conventional processes of decoding symbols and deriving meaning—are displaced in the literate space of the museum. As the reader/viewer and the text/image shift dialectically between the literate and illiterate spheres and negotiate their status, their interactions become sites for social interpretation.
